A natural approach to preventing and treating urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs), where your bladder, kidneys or the connecting tubes are infected, are common conditions. Cystitis is a type of UTI where the bladder becomes inflamed or irritated and is particularly common in women. UTIs can cause significant discomfort, and recurring infections are a challenge for many. Natural remedies like cranberry, D-mannose, and probiotics have been found to aid both in prevention and treatment of these conditions. Drinking plenty of fluids is also key to preventing and treating UTIs.

A Vicious Cycle

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for UTIs, however this can damage the delicate balance of the human microbiome. The gut microbiome is made up of a symbiotic collection of beneficial bacteria that help regulate the immune system, aid digestion, and protect against harmful pathogens. When antibiotics are used, they indiscriminately kill off both harmful and helpful bacteria. This disruption can lead to an overgrowth of pathogens that are normally out-competed by the good bacteria living in and on our bodies.

One consequence can be the development of thrush, a fungal infection caused by Candida (a genus of yeasts) in the mouth or throat, or vaginal yeast infections. Without the protective presence of beneficial bacteria, Candida can thrive, causing uncomfortable symptoms like itching and irritation. Additionally, antibiotic overuse can contribute to bacterial infections, in certain cases creating a vicious cycle of future UTIs and antibiotic treatments, as well as illnesses such as strep throat and C. diff, which can cause diarrhoea. Replenish to Prevent Recurrence

Probiotics, particularly strains like Lactobacillus, can play a supportive role in maintaining a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut and urinary tract. Restoring and maintaining a healthy microbiome with probiotics can help prevent and limit the growth of harmful bacteria, including those that cause UTIs. Studies show that probiotics may reduce the recurrence of UTIs, particularly when used alongside other treatments. (2)

Natural and Traditional Remedies

Cranberry juice

This powerful juicehas long been considered the go-to traditional remedy used to prevent and treat UTIs. Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are naturally occurring plant compounds found in cranberries that interfere with the adhesion mechanisms of E. coli bacteria, preventing the bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls, making it easier for the body to flush out through the urine. Studies suggest that with regular supplementation, the powerful antioxidants in cranberries can reduce UTI frequency in many individuals. It can be used as a safe preventative measure. Blueberries are another fruit that may have protective effects, due to their similar chemical content. (3)

D-mannose

This is another option – a naturally occurring sugar found in various fruits, including cranberries. It works similarly, by inhibiting the binding of E. coli to the urinary tract lining, thus helping the body flush out the bacteria through urination. Research has shown that supplementing with D-mannose may be as effective as antibiotics in preventing recurrent UTIs. It also comes with far fewer potential side effects, making it a promising alternative to antibiotic treatment. (4)

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Another traditional herbal remedy used to support urinary health, particularly in cases of UTIs. Its primary active compound, berberine, which can be taken as a supplement, exerts antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to combat bacterial infections and soothe irritation in the urinary tract. Goldenseal is commonly taken as a supplement, tincture, or tea to relieve symptoms of UTIs, although scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited. Its antimicrobial properties can also help to eliminate pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli from the urinary tract, but it is not recommended to be taken for prolonged periods of time, as it may also reduce the number of other, more beneficial species in the microbiome.
